Early on in my career I discovered my strengths and my weaknesses. Typically, I did this the hard-way. However, over the years as I matured in my career, I felt that sometimes I was to focused on my weaknesses and not focused enough on my strengths.
I eventually realized that this mindset was keeping me from reaching my full potential as a hairdresser as well as a business-women. I wasn’t optimizing my time because I was too scared to try anything new. It occurred to me that I had become way too busy focusing on areas which I was weak in rather than areas which I would excel in.
I knew that I needed to address this on a personal level. So, I sat down and began to look at my behavior patterns with the goal of designing a positive path. I began this journey with a simple piece of paper and pencil.
I quizzed myself regularly on what I was more focused on. It was very enlightening and it was the start of redirecting my energy and my thoughts in a more constructive way.
Now, I certainly don’t endorse focusing just on the items that you’re good at. You must always stretch yourself and attempt to learn new things. You must also work on perfecting new things that you learn. After all, new experiences get you out of your box so that you can grow.
My message is to capitalize on what you are good at and embrace it. Additionally, don’t live in fear, being afraid to try new things. A new skill may be your future strength. Keep in mind that any skill, regardless of if it’s old or new, has the potential to be game changer!
