For most, the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of fall colors is reds, yellows, soft golds and light browns. The trees are changing and the weather is becoming slightly cooler. Likewise, in the hair industry, similar changes are prevalent.
This is the time of year when clients are switching from the bright tones and blondes of summer to the warmer hues of fall. While a lot of folks aren’t quite ready to give up their summer blonde fully, they’re thinking about ways to transition. There are several ways to keep a slight summer glow while moving towards fall shades.
Review various techniques such as using more low lights that usual, or applying baby lights rather than a full headed high light. Balayage is another method that comes to mind when accomplishing the transition to fall, as well as, the Ombre.
For a stylist, it’s important to do a consultation with a client in preparation for fall color changes. Take a look at the client’s complexion and ask what their goals are. For those with a warmer darker toned complexion, they may need to stay with warmer shades. Likewise, those with a cooler complexion may need cooler shades.
Explore the color palettes for the various tones. It’s important to stay on top of new changes in color lines as they enter the market as well. Blacks, browns, reds, blondes and platinums can be identified in the various palettes that are available. Nowadays, there are even warmer tones in the pastels such as deep turquoise colors, strong ambers, and fuchsias.
Keep in mind that every client is an individual with their own specific needs and desires. Work with the client and explain that they have the ability to wear many different tones successfully as long as they complement their own skin tone. If they’re afraid of change, observe the color that they have been wearing and consider a modification which will result in a fresh and non-overwhelming look.
This is a terrific time of year to make slight changes without going overboard. It’s also a great time of year to try new things. There are no right or wrongs when it comes to personal style. And, don’t forget to work with the client to ensure their hair is healthy before making color changes. Often there has been a lot of sun exposure in the summer and it’s important to ensure the hair is strong before coloring.
