Hairbrained – Success Starts with Those Who Surround You by Beauty Expert, Gina Rivera

Over the years I have learned a lot working behind the chair as a stylist, however I have learned equally as much serving as the President of my company.

I have learned that the people I surround myself with make all the difference in the world. When I worked behind the chair, I would really pay attention to my role models. I would take note of what they were doing and take in as much as I could. I continued to learn from them as they shared videos, pictures and recommended classes to me. I would also carefully observe who they surrounded themselves with. Thankfully, I was never afraid to ask questions, and to this day, I am still not afraid. Sometimes, due to pride, we fail to ask questions and miss out on opportunities.

The same ideas can be applied when running a business or a company. I have never been in to micro managing my team. I believe that you should put people in positions and roles that they excel at and which emphasize their skill set. Most important, I select people who are trustworthy and reliable. I also select those that are not afraid to ask questions and people that are open to learning. By selecting the correct team, I am more organized and my distractions are limited. This allows me to concentrate at a higher level on my own role.

It is also important to select people that are forward thinking and who share the same goals and aspirations that I do. Similarly, bringing people that are like minded into my circle is crucial. What I don’t want is someone who I have to constantly stand over to ensure they are doing their job. I also avoid those that will continually try bringing me and others on my team down by their attitude.

I could not be happier and more fortunate to have the people that I have within my company. Both my staff and my art team keep our train moving. Everyone knows  their job and each individual does their job well. And, even though they’re all extremely busy with their own duties, they still manage to lift up those around them. It goes back to one of my favorite sayings; “Team work makes a dream work”. Go Team!
