From the time that we were young, we have all heard people say things like “Take pride in yourself” or “Take pride in your work.” This may sound simplistic, however, taking pride in both yourself and your work is often the key to building a successful business.

In the competitive beauty industry, where clients look to Salon Professionals for inspiration, it’s very important to always present at our best. There is something to be said for “looking the part”. After all, if you show up to take care of clients looking disheveled, why would anyone trust you to make them look their best?

Thus, make sure you look professional when you come to work. Clients often look up to their Salon Professionals to give them courage. Especially when it comes to making a change in their appearance. I believe that Salon Professionals serve as the best trend setters for their clients .

The same goes for your work space. A clean environment lets your clients know that they are important. It shows that you are about excellence and that you want to create a space for your them to enjoy. Someone once said to me “The little things matter the most”. After many years in business, I completely agree.

This means that you must clean the nooks and cranny’s around toilets, trash cans, bathrooms and surfaces. If you have carpet, make sure you stay on top of keeping them clean. Carpets can be beautiful but can get dirty very quickly. Details like this can leave a lasting impression on a client. Likewise, make sure your professional equipment is clean. Don’t forget about items like color bowls, brushes, combs and hot tools.

I have found that if I prepare each evening for the next day, I am better equipped to serve my clients. By doing this, I am also representing myself in the best light possible.

There are several items that I recommend when preparing for the upcoming day. Try to clean your work space daily following servicing your final client. I know it’s the last thing you want to do after working long hours, but trust me, it will pay off the next morning. Likewise, figure out what you will wear the night prior to your work day. Determine what your look will be. This will keep you focused and save you valuable time.

Keep in mind that you never know what may come up in the morning. You could be running late, you may need to pick up products, get gas, or have a last minute personal item come up. Under any circumstance, you will want to be prepared.

All of life’s natural forces that can throw you off. Plus, if you are anything like me, when I am not prepared at the beginning of the day, the rest of the day I feel unprepared. Keep in mind that you always want to be prepared for your clients.

Finally, always be on time and ready to go. Take time to research and bring some new fresh ideas in. Pair that with looking your best and providing a spotless environment, and you’re well on your way. Like I said, the little things matter the most! Talent can only get you so far.
