When it comes to being balanced, I often wonder what my 20 year-old self would say if I told her what I know today. I have certainly traveled a distance from where I started out at early in my career, especially when it comes to creating a healthy balance of priorities.
It’s very challenging to create balance when starting out in the beauty industry or any industry for that matter. This is especially true early on in your career when you must be flexible to be successful, and dependable to build a clientele. At the early stage of most careers, the time commitment has a direct correlation to the positive expansion and growth of the business.
Prior to marrying and having children, I remember being behind the chair six days a week, if not seven. During this period, it was common for me to work a 12 to 16-hour days. It was very exhausting and by the time I arrived home each evening, I was absolutely worthless. I would eat a seven-course meal at 10:00 at night in about 2 minutes flat. Even worse, I didn’t want to talk to anyone.
In retrospect, I realize that it was just a season of my life. And, when I married a few years later, I selected a spouse that was very tolerant and supportive of my ambitions. Life was good.
Next, babies came and I was planning to cut down just a “little bit”. However, being an over achiever, I thought I could balance it all. After all, I had a supportive husband and my babies were cute and cuddly. I didn’t realize for a moment that it would all catch up to me a little later.
Now I know that not everyone has the support system that I had. I also realize that sometimes when we are highly focused in one area, we are unbalanced in another area. It’s at these times that our life can suffer. So, as difficult as it may seem, strive to be balanced in all areas of your life. You will see that everyone benefits when your balancing act stabilizes! And one small take away; when you are finished with work for the day .. Be finished! Remember, everyone benefits; and it will pay off in the long run!
