As students of colour theory can attest, not every colour looks equally impressive on everyone who wears it. The same remains true for nail looks: hair and skin tone, personal style, and age can all impact how shades appear on various wearers. Since hands are one of the first places that initial indicators of aging will show up (tip: remember your hand cream and sunscreen!), they are more likely to be at a disadvantage when trying new nail styles as we age. The skin on the hands gets thinner, revealing the veins more prominently. Cumulative environmental damage (UV rays, dryness, etc.) accelerates the development of hand spots and wrinkles. To lend a hand (if you’ll pardon the pun) to our beauties over 50, we’ve compiled a list of flattering styles that will look gorgeous on all fingertips, no matter their years. Read on for nail looks to recommend for clients over 50.

To begin with, lighter shades will almost always look better on more mature fingertips, as dark nail colours tend to emphasize spotting and discoloration on the hands. Unless you are sure which shades look best for your client, it may be wise to avoid darker tones altogether in favour of lighter polishes. The good news with this tip is that far from inhibiting available options, this still encompasses a massive range of colour choices for beauties of every inclination–baby pinks, whites, and nudes for the natural, pastels, and potentially even neons for the more expressive. Consider having a sample palette of all your best light-coloured polishes on hand to easily showcase and test different shades for your clients when they come in so that they already have a spectrum of fun options to excite their imaginations with–regardless of the depth of tones. Tip: shorter fingers tend to wear bright colours incredibly well, such as hot pink or bright red. Longer, more slender digits will be especially flattered by similarly delicate shades, like light pinks and nudes, which will elevate the manicure without distraction. For length, these beauties tend to look their best with a shorter, squoval (square-oval) shape that will flatter while leaving space for any hands-on tasks throughout their day-to-day lives.

Next, it is worth acknowledging that warmer tones tend to appear more advantageously than cooler tones upon aging skin. Orange-based rather than blue-based colours prevent veins and arteries from showing up even more prominently in the thin skin on the top of the hands than they usually would. This is the classic red nails’ time to shine: bright and orangey red nails will draw the eye to the fabulous manicure rather than highlighting aspects of the hands that we’d prefer to understate. If a client is leaning more toward darker colours, then opting for a warm burgundy, plum, or even brown will show up better than a cooler-toned version of the same shades.

If your client likes to sparkle, consider recommending a shimmer or metallic polish for their look, which will highlight the manicure without distracting via chunkier glitter or confetti. Shimmers work well across the colour spectrum, and colour-loving clients are sure to obsess over the “holographic” style over their favorite colour. This is also an excellent opportunity for clients who prefer dark shades since the holographic powder will lighten the final look. Metallic shades will look great with jewelry (make sure to ask whether your client tends to wear more gold, rose gold, or silver) and are similar enough to nudes to be flattering with every outfit and setting while adding something extra to keep the look exciting.

French tips, and variations thereof, will always be an excellent stylistic choice for any manicure. Especially as we age, playing around with the style of tip and choice of colour for each part of the nail can be fun. The standard nude or pink with white is an elegant classic, and indulging in the same style with different shades can add an innovative touch that will keep the look fresh.

Now, the next time your client comes in hoping for a fresh new mani but is still determining what will look best for them, these colours and styles can be suggested, which will highlight their natural assets while downplaying any detractors that can come with time. Remind the colour-lovers that any shades they’re unsure of for their nails can always be tested on the pedicure first, and don’t be afraid to try new things if they are interested in exploring more options. Together, you and your clients will be all set to grab hold of the new day with new nails!

Did you know that Indian Weddings are not all the same? There are more than thirty distinct cultures and it is important to understand the type of Indian family the wedding is for. Are they from North India, South India, or Punjabi? Regardless, each celebration brings its own qualities and spirit.

Planning an Indian Wedding is not for the faint hearted, it takes a lot of work to plan one. Within each wedding ceremony there are over 40 different rituals that take place. If not well prepared, it can be very overwhelming.

We explored some of the rituals and here are some we’d like to share:

The Pithi

A ritual performed separately at the bride’s and groom’s homes meant to bring good luck. A paste made from chick flour, rose water and turmeric is applied to their skin. The paste is yellow and thick which brightens their skin and bestows blessings upon them.

The Engagement

There is an agreement between both families and this is known as the engagement. During this time, the wedding date is set. The wedding rituals start 15 days before the actual wedding and begins with Barni Band-hwana. A ritual where a piece of thread is tied to the hands of the bridge and groom. The parents then bless them.

The Indian tradition wedding has three separate events. The Sangeet & Mehendi, the wedding ceremony and the reception.

Sangeet and Mehendi

Sangeet is a ceremony where the relatives and friends of the couple get together to know each other. This ceremony takes place at the bride’s home. In this ceremony, the bride and her female family members take part in the Mehendi rituals. This ritual is when the application of henna is applied to the bride’s hands and feet. Interestingly, the stronger the colour of henna, the stronger the bond is with the newlyweds and the deeper the henna colour, the better the relationship with the mother-in-law.

The wedding invitations

Wedding invitations are only for the family close and close family friends.

Indians believe celebrations are to bring families and close friends together. The friends invited are the ones the families can call the real friends of the family. A typical Indian wedding have about 300 – 500 guests from both families.

The wedding procession

The groom’s procession is called the Baraat. He arrives to songs and dance from family and relatives that surround him. He meets the bride and her family at the entrance of the venue. The bride’s mother welcomes the groom and the rest of the family exchange pleasantries.

The bride and the groom exchange Milni Mala, floral garlands, to wear around their necks. This is a symbol of their acceptance of one another. The groom is then led to the altar to wait for the bride.

The wedding ceremony under the Mandap

Hindu weddings wedding venue is under a canopy known as Mandap. It is either placed indoors or outdoors. The Mandap features themed decor of colourful flowers, fabric and curtains. The maternal uncle walks the bride down the aisle as the father of the bride waits at the altar. The wedding ceremony begins with the bride’s parents giving away the bride. This ritual is the Kanya Daan.

Wedding dressing

The Indian bride is not dressed in white, as this colour is for mourning according to their culture. So, in a Hindu wedding, bright, vibrant colours are used and accessorized with gold jewellery.  The bride’s forehead and neck are also adorned with lots of jewellery. The bride has three or four dresses for different rituals. These dresses known as Lehenga are long skirts with a matching tops and scarves.

On the wedding day, the Indian bride wears a red or pink sari which represents happiness and good luck. The Sari is 6 foot fabric adorned with crystals and real 24 karat gold thread. The groom wears a long shirt extended to the knees, a Kafni with Pijamo leggings and a turban which is optional.

The wedding reception

Indian wedding ceremonies are full of food and fun. An Indian wedding menu has up to ten starters, five mains along with rice, salad, yogurt and naan bread. The food never runs out in an Indian wedding. It is replenished all night with songs and dance accompanying the food. The wedding photoshoot continues through the event capturing all the detailed rituals.

The day after the wedding, the Bou Bhat ritual takes place. The groom’s family and the close bride’s family come for lunch at the couple’s home. During this event, the bride is formally welcomed into the family. The groom takes a pledge to provide for her food and clothing. To fulfil the pledge, he serves her food and gives her a new sari. Sari is a treasured fabric among the Hindu.

The married life blessings

Sometime after the wedding, the Aashirwad ceremony takes place. In this ceremony, the groom’s family, the bride’s family plus their close relatives visit the couple. Parents, aunts and uncles from both sides offer their blessings to the couple. The bride receives gifts of gold or diamonds by the groom’s parents. This ritual is the culmination of a marriage in an Indian culture. They always start with blessings and end with them. What a beautiful way to marry!

It is believed that our hair can say a lot about our mood and intentions. Apparently, we as humans can subconsciously read the situation regards romantic relations by how we wear our hair.

Romantic braids, sultry curls, sexy crops, sensual updos and touchable waves are all beautiful and romantic ways to wear our hair for our next date night. Here are five looks that will make you feel loved and cherished in every way:

  1. Cute Flirtatious Braids

By simply using a couple of hidden bobby-pins and finishing spray, this beautiful loose braid swept back with the rest of your hair down will certainly open up your face and help you shine bright.

  1. Neat braid and Messy Bun

To create the most charming look, combining neat and naturally messy hair is always a winner. A tightly braided headband with a messy bun made from slightly curled strands shows a durable and stunning hairdo which will look appropriate, regardless of what you’re wearing.

  1. French Twist

Nothing screams romance more than a classic French twist: a perfectly feminine, classy, and seductive look, perfect for any luxurious dinner date. Paired with elegant earrings and a stunning gown, this look has to be the favourite!

  1. Old Hollywood Waves

A glamourous but smart hairstyle are Old Hollywood Waves. Very retro and easy to achieve on most lengths of hair. With old-fashioned perceptions of beauty, this look will certainly stand the tests of time, especially if you use strong hairspray to set and stay!

  1. Short Wavy Hair

By using different textures, short hair can look extremely sexy and romantic. By using curls or even a crimper, you can create an effortless look. You do have to remember to fix with a firm-hold hairspray though, as short hair is notoriously bad at keeping its shape.

Coming in hot is the Chopped Bob. Who has seen Jenna Ortega who played Wednesday Addams looking incredible in her new look? Clients are going to be going wild for their long locks to be cut into this layered, edgier, sassy look. Even JLo has been spotted opting for this sultry look.

Last year we featured the ‘Wolf Cut’. This has been replaced by the new choppy bob which will become this years ‘go-to’ for your clients. A mid-length, much shaggier style with no real definition on the outline shape like the traditional bob, where precision is everything.

This look has much more movement, an easier style to manage, a get-up-and-go kinda style. As the look is more textured, it will suit many more of your clients regardless of their face shape or texture too.

Although face shape isn’t as important with this cut, the way you cut it is. Focusing on adding as much texture as possible is key to this look. It will soften the look and make it a more ‘lived in’ look. Using a razor for this cut would also work, making slicing motions when cutting, crafting each section to create movement.

When drying this look, consider either using a texture spray and let it air dry naturally or certainly using a diffuser will help speed up the look. Try not to create frizz by running your fingers through it too much. The more natural, the better.

An easy look to take care of if cut correctly and a style that will keep you feeling sassy, chic and this year’s hot ticket! Now watch all the influencers asking for this in your Salon this year!

By now, we have all heard about the procedure that has facelift-like results at a fraction of the cost without extended downtime. The thread lift is undoubtedly one of the hottest procedures trending in beauty right now. Though thread lifts have been around since 1990, their current surge in popularity is evident.

The thread lift works by inserting a medical-grade thread into the face and then pulling the skin up by tightening the thread. Candidates 30-50 years of age are prime clients for this procedure, starting at $2,000.  Most candidates also qualify quite easily since threading is minimally invasive compared to a full facelift.

Botox or Juvederm are often used in conjunction with threading to obtain better and longer-lasting results. Almost all areas of the face are eligible for this service, including jowls, forehead, cheeks, under eyes, and eyebrows. During the procedure, the surgeon will place a dissolvable suture with tiny, unnoticeable barbs along various lines of the face depending on the final goal. The barbs are painless but help to keep the thread in place. Once in place, the surgeon will tighten the thread, pulling and lifting the skin up. The body then detects the sutures and fills the gaps with collagen.  Results have been shown to last from one to three years for most candidates.

The procedure itself typically ranges from 40 minutes to an hour. During that time, the patient will be prepped, then reclined, and a needle will be used to feed the thread through the skin.  Patients typically report feeling light pressure during that time. Once the line is in place, it’s tightened, the needle removed, and the procedure is over.  Unlike traditional facelifts, most clients may return to work or go home immediately following threading.

Some patients experience minimal swelling, bruising, bleeding, and slight pain where the injection occurred. Complications include dimpling of the skin that can be easily corrected, an allergic reaction to the thread material, and slight movement of the thread, which can result in a bumpy look. Approximately 15% of patients experience at least one complication. There is also the possibility of infection that exists with any surgical procedure.

After threading, patients will be advised to sleep on their backs for some time to avoid putting pressure on the face. They will also be discouraged from using regular moisturizers and rubbing their face. These directives are to avoid misplacing sutures to obtain the best possible results.

Finding a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon is the best option for selecting this treatment.  Most surgeons will provide instructions for items you should and shouldn’t do as you approach the surgery.  Always disclose your entire medical history and any allergies you may have at the consultation.

The Hair Industry is a big contributor to pollution. Hair colour, hairsprays and heating tools being the biggest culprits. However, salons and independents are starting to think more carefully on how they can become eco-friendly, making their businesses more sustainable.

The top three issues in our Industry are:

  1. There are a lot of waste products. Cotton wool, plastic shampoo bottles, colour tubes, foils, tissues and towels.
  2. Chemicals such as Hair Colour, bleach, peroxide.
  3. It has been reported that just washing one client’s hair a day uses 14,222 litres of water and 1252 kWh of energy annually.

So, how can we make our Suites more sustainable?

  1. Firstly, calculate your carbon footprint. Get your energy supplier to do an energy audit. Using a green energy supplier will help massively. Also, check your thermostat & monitor it to save wasting energy unnecessarily.
  2. Train your team. Simply turning off staff room lights will contribute to the salon’s sustainability. Encourage your team to think ‘Green’ and invite them to share ideas on how to be more environmentally friendly.
  3. Swap out all bulbs for energy saving bulbs.
  4. Consider using single-use biodegradable salon towels so you use your washing machine less.
  5. Recycle all plastics, paper, glass, hair colour tubes and foils. Research and find someone who will take all hair cuttings to make wigs, oil spill or even fertilizer.
  6. Change your showerheads and use a brand which reduces water usage by up to 80%.
  7. Go paper-free. Start using a digital platform for booking appointments.
  8. Produce oxygen by featuring some potted plants in your salon.

Lastly, inspire Your clients. A large part of living sustainably is your relationship you are your guests. These relationships are to be cultivated and strengthened. As you value your clients, share your salon’s eco-activities with them. You may become their source of inspiration for both beauty and sustainable business practices in the future.
